Photo roulette online
Two different things get called photo roulette. Knowing which one you want saves you from handing your camera roll to a website.
The party game
One version is a guessing game. Everyone in the room submits photos, the game shows one at random, and you guess whose it was. It is genuinely fun in a group and it needs everyone in the same room at the same time. Browser versions of this exist. They work by uploading every player’s photos to a server so the game can deal them back out, which is the part worth thinking about before you play.
The solo version
The other version has no players and no guessing. It shuffles your own library and shows you one photo you had forgotten about. No round, no score, no upload. That is what PicRoulette does, and it runs on your phone rather than in a browser, for a reason worth stating plainly.
Why there is no web version of this
A website cannot read the photos on your phone. There is no browser permission that grants a page access to your camera roll, and there should not be. Any site offering photo roulette online has to ask you to upload the pictures first, and at that point your photos live on a server you do not control, under terms you did not read, for as long as that company exists.
An app can ask iOS for read access to your library and never send a byte anywhere. That distinction is the whole argument for doing this natively. PicRoulette reads your library on the device and shows you a photo. Nothing is uploaded, because nothing needs to be.
So which one do you want?
If you want the guessing game with friends in the same room, search for the party game and accept that your photos are going to a server. If you want to open something and be handed a photo from four years ago that you had completely forgotten, that is PicRoulette, and it is free.
